Stages in Evangelical Political Reflection

A brief survey of twentieth-century political reflection among evangelicals cannot capture the diversity of the movement or make the necessary nuances about dominant positions. Nor is it easy with evangelicals to disentangle political reflection from political action, especially in light of the way that activism dominates the evangelical response to the public sphere. Nonetheless, a tentative division of twentieth-century evangelical political reflection into five periods may reveal how the common framework has been sustained through shifting theological emphases and a changing public landscape. What such a survey shows is that the intuitive and populist elements in the framework have been the most constant. Only in the last two or three decades have they been challenged from within evangelicalism, and with as yet only minimal results. In contrast, evangelical activism and evangelical biblicism have varied more dramatically. Shifts in what they meant and how they have been applied account for the most important changes in the nature of political reflection.
